A Seasonal Guide for What to Wear In Your Boston Family Photos | Boston Family Photographer

Choosing outfits for family photos doesn’t have to be stressful — especially when you dress with New England weather, not against it. Boston’s seasons each have their own personality, and your outfits should match the vibe (and the temperature). Here’s a simple breakdown to help you look polished, comfortable, and very “you” in every season.

Spring: Light Layers + Pops of Color

Spring in Boston is basically our annual coming-out-of-hibernation party. Think layers, patterns, and brighter tones that feel fresh and hopeful.

Try: light jackets, cardigans, denim layers, soft florals, and cheerful colors.
Common mistake? Dressing for summer. Spring in Boston, MA can still be chilly, so hold off on sundresses and bare legs until the temps truly agree.

Summer: Breezy + Comfortable

Summer is the season long, flowy dresses that photograph beautifully (and often don’t show sweat marks, bonus on humid days)

Try: breathable fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, and lighter neutrals mixed with soft color. Bare feet at the beach or in your yard at home are totally fair game in summer

Fall: Cozy Texture + Warm Tones

Fall is peak family photo season in Boston for a reason. Rich colors and layered textures shine against autumn foliage.

Try: sweaters, boots, corduroy, plaid, and warm tones like rust, olive, and mustard. Layers add visual interest and keep everyone comfortable.

Winter: Classic + Clean

Winter sessions can feel magical with the right styling. Accessories matter here (and can make or break your kid’s photo stamina) I actually think the winter color palette can be anything! Bright primaries, muted neutrals, or similar rich tones of fall. Keep pattern minimal and let layering coats, scarves, and texture do the work.

Pro Tips:

  1. Tissues for big and little noses

  2. Handwarmers in the pockets

  3. Layer thinner leggings under pants for warmth

Try: a bright OR neutral color palette, wool coats, knit hats, and boots. Bonus points for coordinating (not matching!) layers and lots of texture.

Bottom line: No matter the season, the best outfits for family photos are ones you can move, cuddle, and laugh in. When you feel comfortable, it shows — and that’s what makes family photos feel natural and timeless.
